Urgent Help Needed

I do get internet access though. After boot there are 4 copies of svchost.exe running & 3 copies of explorer.exe - is that normal? XP problem
Would re-install of XP or IE be a complete fix for this ? Right now my system recoginzes the NIC but will not Ping the Modem. It will successfully ping internal loopback (?) (127.0.0.1). When I do ipconfig /all I get blank for Default Gateway. The Modem & DSL WORKS, I use it on a laptop for now.
